Something like a half-marathon that takes place at a great destination. If long distances aren’t their thing, or yours, pick a cool 5k! And, the ideas are not limited to running. You could get them scuba lessons, dance classes, rock climbing lessons and so on. The options are pretty much endless. But, the joy and memories that you will create together will last a lifetime!

So, this year skip the pound cake, neck ties, jewelry and other junk that they will probably end up returning anyway. Give someone you love a gift that will truly keep giving, a gift of health. The Revolution: Fitness & Nutrition Planning

REVOLUTION-LOGO-7For those of you that have been following The Revolution then we hope you are beginning to understand what it is. And, what the magnitude can be. If not then you probably want to start with this.

To sum it up, The Revolution is a cooperative effort that will involve a number of health & wellness, fitness and nutrition related businesses that are in and around Birmingham. And, it will also include the most important part, you. These revolutionary businesses and providers are coming together to offer you the most complete and comprehensive wellness opportunity ever created. We are working together so that collectively we can help you become the best you that you can be while maintaining a focus on your life, your personality, your needs, your wants and your goals.

The programming for The Revolution will consist of several elements.

1. Individual Consultation

If you are interested in becoming part of The Revolution then we can assume that you have a desire to live life well. You want to be the best you that you possibly can be. In order for you to accomplish this effectively and efficiently we need to know as much about you as possible.

2. Individual Testing

You will undergo both metabolic testing and nutrition testing. This is critical. The testing will give us the other piece of the puzzle.

3. Planning

4. Fitness

5. Nutrition

6. Progress Tracking & Assessment

7. Continued Follow-up Consultation

Today, we will look at the individualized planning elements of The Revolution.

At PhysIQ, maybe the single biggest point of frustration that we see is not knowing what to do or how to do it. No matter what your ultimate goals may be, not having a plan to reach those goals very likely is just begging for failure. But, where do you even begin with establishing the right plan for you?

With so many options and so much information out there it can be incredibly overwhelming. May even seem impossible. And, hopefully in your quest for knowledge you realize that fad diets and trendy exercise programs are not the solution. You need an individualized, personalized plan just for you. Not some one-size-fits-a-few program.

As we have explained, to establish a plan that is truly personalized for you the combination of consultation and testing is the first step. With data, knowledge and guidance you can then design your unique plan.

Let’s start with your nutrition plan. Every human being is uniquely made. As such, your dietary plan needs to reflect your personal requirements. Getting too much of a nutritional component (fat, calories, protein, vitamins, etc.) can cause problems. Likewise, not getting enough can cause a different set of issues. To achieve optimized results you must provide your body with what it requires.

Your plan needs to be comprised of foods and liquids to consume or avoid, when to eat, how often to eat, how much to eat and supplementation. And, that’s just the basics.

For your fitness plan, it is pretty much the same song and dance. There is a type of workout that is most ideally suited for your goals, abilities and personality. Most people do not realize that there is such a thing as over-training. It’s similar to under-training in that the more you stray from your optimal levels of activity the more you will minimize your results.

Those that participate in the revolution will have the opportunity to take the results of their testing and work with trained professionals to create their individualized fitness and nutrition plans. You will be given the blueprints for how to become the best you possible. All that will be left to do is the commitment and the work. Easy enough, right?

No two plans will be the same. And, they should not be. You are a unique individual. And, your unique body and mind need a plan that reflects that!

To learn more about The Revolution stay tuned. We will be contacting the first participants after Thanksgiving. We have received so many amazing inquiries. Keep ’em coming!

PhysIQ FAQ’s: Why am I not losing weight?

One question that we hear as much as or more than any other is someone asking How to Lose Weight. These frustrated and discouraged individuals often believe that they are doing what they are supposed to do. They have tried every new diet,  every popular workout DVD and even those fancy cleanses with only a little, if any, measurable results. Or, they lost a little weight and put it right back on.

Sadly, most are usually they are on the verge of giving up. There is no one “right” way for losing weight. But, there are a lot of wrong ways. And, there are also a number of variables that cannot be directly controlled like hormone imbalance, health issues or genetics.

There is hope. Everyone is capable. You just need guidance on how to lose weight and keep it off. But, let’s look at some of the reasons why you may be struggling.

Stress.

Stress is a factor for most people. And, this time of year it sadly rises even more. There is absolutely no doubt that stress can cause your weight loss to come to a screeching halt. Or, it can even cause you to put on surprising pounds.

Here’s why:

  • Stress eating. Here’s a little tidbit of irony to think about, many of us often look for comfort in food when we are stressed, anxious or depressed. On the flip-side, we often indulge or reward ourselves when we are happy or celebrating. The moral of the story is that you probably need to work on your emotional relationship with food!
  • It’s a habit. This goes side-by-side with what we just covered. Many of us do not realize how addicted we are to stress eating. Have you ever found yourself 1/2 way through a pint of ice cream before you even realized what you are doing? That’s called a habit my friend.
  • Cortisol. This is a hormone naturally produced by the body. And, it is actually vital to many functions and in many situations. However, an over-abundance of cortisol can be responsible for weight gain. But, there are safe, clinical methods to control hormones including cortisol.

Sleep.

Not getting enough sleep has an effect on the brain and the body. Not only will you be less than energized during work and workouts, but it will also play tricks on your mind. You will be hungrier than you should be because your body believes it needs additional calories to replace missed sleep.

But, guess what? Not getting enough sleep can be a cause of hormone imbalance! The amount of sleep you get impacts your hunger and fullness hormones, including two called ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin tells your brain when it’s time to eat. Sleep less and your body makes more ghrelin. Uh-oh…

Leptin is on the other side of the fence. It tell your brain when you have eaten enough. When you’re sleep deprived, even a little, leptin levels plummet, and a signal is sent to your brain to eat more.

And, guess what? Lack of sleep also leads to a spike in your cortisol levels. The same cortisol that we just discussed in stress related weight gain is showing up again. So, here’s a little piece of free advice: SLEEP!

Diet & Nutrition. Here’s one of the two really obvious ones. Your dietary and nutrition habits have a significant effect on your weight. But, do not buy into fad diets. That’s a no-no.

We are not going to dive in here. That could go on for days and days! But, if you want to start learning more about diet and nutrition then click here.

Exercise & Fitness. We are still in the same boat. Exercise & Fitness would be the second of the “obvious two.” Unless you are from Neptune then you cannot truly be healthy or have your weight under control without physical activity.

To read more about Exercise & Fitness click here.

Hormones.

Oh, hormones….why must you do the things that you do. Not only do you force us to ride a never ending emotional roller coaster, but you have to make us gain weight, too? That’s not fair!

Hormones are necessary, and frustrating, little evils! They direct our body’s responses: how we respond to outside stimuli, like food, exercise, stress, sleep, and more. They play a huge role in how your metabolism functions—how you use food for fuel, whether food gets stored or burned, whether you feel hungry or full, whether you experience cravings or not, your mood, and even your motivation to exercise.

With that said, it’s important to understand that there’s no absolute level they need to be in order for you to lose weight. Every person’s resting or exercising hormonal levels are unique. So, a good place to start would be having a complete hormone evaluation, as well as undergoing metabolic testing.

Health Issues.

If you have be diligently following a weight-loss nutrition and fitness plan without progress then there is probably something else going on. Maybe you are not following a nutrition and/or fitness plan that is optimized specifically for you. There’s also good chance that your food portion sizes have gone up as your body tries to handle the increase in activity levels.

But it could be something with your health. A medical condition — or medication — may be to blame. It’s probably something simple, but you still need to be mindful. There are several conditions can cause weight gain or hinder weight loss.

If this sounds like you then it’s probably time to see a physician so that you can get to the bottom of it.

Lifestyle.

Not to redundantly beat the deceased horse here, but if you are not losing weight like you want then maybe it’s time to reevaluate your lifestyle. Everything that goes on in the crazy story that we all call life can have an effect on our health, and in turn our weight.

Your lifestyle is the sum of all of the critical elements of how you choose to live life. How you live can absolutely, without question or doubt affect your health and your body. We are not insisting that anyone completely eliminate some of the joys from their life. But, we are encouraging you to prioritize. And, we are letting you know that almost every single choice you make today will be immediately correlated with your health, body and weight tomorrow.

So…start living life well!

Commitment.

We will make this short and simple. Are you committed to reaching your goals? Or, are you hoping that you will reach them? There is a profound difference in “wanting something to happen,” and having “the will to make it happen.”

It is your choice. No one else can decide for you. And, no one else can put forth the effort. PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine can give you health answers, wellness guidance,  metabolic test results, personal data and lifestyle planning. But, only you can make the decision to use it.

Until next time…Live Life Well.

Previewing the Revolution: Consultation & Testing

By now, you have probably seen The Revolution mentioned. If not then you probably want to start with this. We are approaching the official launch. And, we hope that all of you are as excited as we are.

2. Individual Testing

3. Planning

4. Fitness

5. Nutrition

6. Progress Tracking & Assessment

7. Continued Follow-up Consultation

Today, we would like to take a look at the foundation for all other elements in the programming, Individualized Consultation and Testing.

If you are interested in becoming part of The Revolution then we can assume that you have a desire to live life well. You want to be the best you that you possibly can be. In order for you to accomplish this effectively and efficiently we need to know as much about you as possible.

The initial consultation will involve an in-depth look at your past and present health, fitness and nutrition practices. We need to know where you were, where you are and, of course, where you want and need to go! The consultation will be focused on both your physical needs and your “life,” or mental, needs.

Once we begin to understand how your history, as well as how you are made, wired and programmed, we can move forward. Basically, we need to get to know you. You are the one that will be going through the process. You are the one that will be eating, sleeping and sweating for a better life. So, we need to know what you are physically capable of. It is equally important, though, that we understand what you like and what will be best suited for your personality.

Overlooking any or all of this is why so many individuals fail in their quests for a healthier life.

Next up, is testing. You will undergo both metabolic testing and nutrition testing. This is critical. The testing will give us the other piece of the puzzle.

Metabolic Testing is a set of diagnostics designed to provide information about how your body works. There are two primary forms of Metabolic Tests that may be administered, blood tests and fitness/stress testing. At PhysIQ, we commonly administer both types of tests so that we can have the most complete information possible. In your case, we will administer whichever test(s) needed to help you as a Revolutionary.

Fitness Testing is performed using a metabolic cart, or a device that can acquire data such as the oxygen consumed during the performance of max or sub-maximal physical exertion. The calculations performed and data acquired allows for trained professionals (see: physicians) to analyze the amount of energy expended during physical activity.

(Read More About Metabolic Testing Here)

The other side of the testing coin is MicroNutrient Testing. Eating a balanced diet, exercising and taking a multivitamin is simply not enough. Are you taking too many supplements? Not enough? Each person’s body is unique in its own way.  Due to the complexity of the human body, an individualized healthcare approach is the only way to guarantee optimal results.

Micronutrient tests measure the function of 35 nutritional components including vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids within our white blood cells.  Scientific evidence shows us that analyzing the white blood cells gives us the most accurate analysis of a body’s deficiencies.

The results of your testing will include an overview page with all deficiencies listed, numeric and graphic reports easily identifying deficiencies and repletion and supplementation recommendations. In other word, we can help you figure out what kind of dietary & nutrition plan will be most effective for you personally.

(Read More About MicroNutrient Testing Here)

Once initial consultation and testing is complete we can really start to make things happen for you. Basically, we will be taking out as many of the guessing games and generalizations as possible.

Once the data and results are compiled we will bring you back in to take our consultation to the next level. We utilize the data along with our initial consultative assessment to create the most optimized wellness plan just for you. The wellness plan will include fitness and nutrition planning based on you and only you.

Next time we will dive into those elements. But, for now we have overloaded your brain enough with jargon and speak. If you are ready to change your life and join the Revolution  then please click here to get started. Or, you are welcome to contact PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine directly at www.PhysIQMedicine.com/contact

PhysIQ FAQ’s: What about popular “diets?”

PhysIQ FAQ’s: Why can’t I just do one of the many popular diets out there to lose weight?

Well, you probably can. But, don’t say we did not warn you when you gain that weight back after you finish the “diet.” Most of the so called “fad diet” simply trick your body into losing weight. Eventually your body is going to wise up to what you are doing.

The “diets” typically focus only on weight loss. Period. Not long-term results, not health and certainly not nutrition. Just weight loss and that is a mistake. Now, there is nothing wrong with wanting to lose bad weight. Not at all. But, we strongly encourage you to consider doing it the “right way.”

Another flaw with a fad “diet” is that they do not consider the unique needs and individuality of each human being. From metabolism to personality, from body chemistry to habits, each individual person is vastly different than any other. And, each individual has a unique set of nutrition requirements. So, ultimately a fad diet may end up causing more harm than good because basic nutrition needs are not met.

Lastly, these types of diets only provide a short-term fix for a much bigger problem. They fool you with big promises of quick results. But, neither the diet programs nor the results are sustainable. Thus you have the yo-yo effect of most of these diet platforms.

So, what is the right way? Well, there’s bad news and good news.

The bad news is there is no perfect “one-sized-fits-all” solution for weight loss. And, certainly not one that provides both lightning fast results AND sustainable results.

But, here’s the good news! There is a way to achieve the results that you want while maintaining the health and nutrition that you need. And, it can provide long-term, sustainable results. So, you won’t have to put in all that work for a change that is here today and gone tomorrow!

The right way focuses on health, and consists of proper nutrition and fitness. It is not about starvation and sweating until you drop. If you do it the right way you will eat plenty and exercise just enough. The tricky part is establishing what nutrition and activity your body needs to realize your personal goals.

That’s where PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine comes in to help. We can provide the consultation, testing, services and solutions that your body needs to reach your goals. So, not only will you achieve your weight loss goals but you will look good, feel great and be much more fit and healthy.

The Wellness Revolution!

For the last few weeks we have been dropping hints about opportunities for “guinea pigs.” But, we have been pretty vague and ambiguous about what we have in the works. Today we would like to give you all a little more information as to what we are currently calling, “The Wellness Project.”

If you have been following PhysIQ for a while then hopefully you have started to understand what it is that we do. We provide consultation to individuals that need help with health, fitness, nutrition, hormone and general wellness. We offer comprehensive testing to better understand how your body works during physical activity and what nutrition your body needs. We offer other services and solutions to allow you to live live well and healthily. And, we offer guidance to help you feel better, look great and live happily.

We have also realized that many out there may still have a hard time understanding exactly how we can help them. In order to try to “connect the dots” for everyone we decided to create an opportunity for selected individuals to come into the PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine offices and experience it all first hand. And, in turn we might be able to use their experiences to help others better understand the PhysIQ concept. But, the more this idea was discussed, the more we realized that we have the potential to help create something even bigger and greater.

Talks began to take place with others in the health, wellness, nutrition and/or fitness industries. Ideas began to get bounced around. Questions were asked. Answers were established. And, ultimately everyone involved wanted to do something to promote a common goal: More healthy lives for those in and around the Birmingham area.

And so the idea for “The Wellness Project” was born.

Some of the details are still being finalized. Subsequent updates will be made. But, here is the initial concept:

  • PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine, Elite Nutrition, several health & fitness centers, and other related businesses will be working together to offer selected individuals the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive health & wellness program. Individuals will receive consultation, testing, planning and guidance throughout the duration of the program. Basically, those that are selected only have to remain committed and follow the plans that are created based on their own individual goals and needs.
  • It will all start with a comprehensive consultation. Health, history, goals, wants, needs, etc will all be discussed.
  • From there the participating individuals will undergo metabolic and micronutrient testing, as well as BMI (body mass index) testing in The Bod Pod.
  • Once the results are available the participants will receive fitness and nutrition consultation.
  • The consultations, as well as the test results, will be utilized to create a personalized wellness plan for each individual including fitness planning, dietary planning, nutrition supplementation, etc. All elements will be necessary in order for the individual to optimize results.
  • Each individual participant will then be matched with and referred to at least one fitness center. The referral will be based on the individual’s goals, test results, past experience, health, personality and all other relevant information acquired during consultation.
  • Individuals will be referred to Elite Nutrition for additional nutrition supplementation and consultation. A supplementation plan will be advised and established based on the testing, as well as the personalized dietary and fitness plans.
  • In addition to following the designed plans, individuals will be asked to maintain diaries, journals and/or blog entries chronicling their progress. Relevant activities such as what they eat, how much they sleep, physical activity, and so on will be documented and shared via website, social media, emails, etc.
  • Those chosen will also be asked to participate in followup consultations. Followups will monitor health, progress and allow for any necessary changes to planning. And, followups may include progress pictures, interviews, etc.
  • Additionally, we are working with additional retailers such as athletic apparel providers, grocers and restaurants, etc in hopes that we can provide as much as possible to our brave and deserving participants.
  • As elements of the project are added updates will be made.
  • A website for the program is coming ASAP. Stay tuned!

The BIGGEST mistake of all??

For the last few weeks we have been discussing the 10 Most Common Health & Wellness Mistakes that we see here in the PhysIQ offices. There were some pretty obvious ones in there. And, there were also some that you not have thought about. Here’s the list:

  1. You skip or put off going to see a doctor.
  2. You are doing nothing.
  3. You are not following a strategic exercise and fitness plan for your specific goals Health & Fitness Goals.
  4. You are trying to lose weight too fast with Fad Diets.
  5. You diet without exercise (OR You exercise without changing your diet).
  6. You are skimping on sleep.
  7. You are Over training/Under training your body.
  8. You are not eating right and supplementing your nutrition.
  9. You reach your goal…then stop.
  10.  You give up because you are not seeing results fast enough or for any other reason.

If you take a look at the mistakes people are making in their efforts to get health and live well you can often trace them all back to one thing: Lifestyle. So, today are we going to take a look at what is often the real mistake or issue.

It should come as no surprise that we are firm believers in the power and effect of a healthy lifestyle.  Our name is PhyIQ Lifestyle Medicine, after all! A lifestyle that promotes health and wellness can truly change many things from the way you look to underlying health problems that you may have to deal with daily. Of course any improvements are better than nothing. But, it’s when you adapt a healthy lifestyle that you will really make a difference.

So, what does this mean? It means that you have to treat the elements of your wellness plan with priority. It means this is how you are going to live life, as opposed to something you do from time to time or when it is convenient. If you are going to truly get serious about health and wellness then this is cannot be taken lightly.

Most of these things we need to prioritize are things we should already be doing anyway. Things like getting enough rest, eating healthily with proper nutrition, and staying active. But, busy lives and the temptation to live a life of “convenience,” often win out.

Here’s our advice:

Do not sacrifice sleep. Establish a time to shut turn out the lights and a time to wake up. Keep your times consistent. And, always try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This is when your batteries recharge and your body recovers. Make it happen!

Treat exercise and fitness like it is your job. We all have certain things that we are not going to miss unless there are extenuating circumstances. Work, football games or a monthly get-together with our friends. And, we all need to place exercising on this list and keep it there. Establish a schedule for the days, times and duration that you will work out 3-5 times per week. Then make it a non-negotiable, can’t miss thing that you do…and love to do!

Eat right. Sure, it is easier said than done. But, getting the right nutrition consumption from a healthy diet is absolutely critical. You can exercise your tail off, but you cannot out work eating bad. So, that is going to mean trading out the drive-thru during lunches for a healthy packed lunch. It means being prepared and taking healthy food with you to tailgates or football parties. And, it means that you only indulge or reward yourself on seldom occasion. But, the long-term, and even short-term, improvements to your health will make it worth your while. Plus, you are going to enjoy those indulgences even more and probably save some money, too!

Stay in control of your health. Every 3 months, or 3,000 miles. We all know what that means. And, we give that kind of priority and awareness to our automobiles. Given how reliant we are upon vehicles its understandable. But, are you not even so much more reliant upon yourself and your body? Take care of yourself.

These are a good place to start. And, then you can build from there. We know it may sound challenging or even like you are going to have to sacrifice a lot of things you enjoy. But, we promise it will become second-nature. That is why it must be your lifestyle. If it is a lifestyle you will not be giving things up. Instead you will be replacing some things and changing some others. There will still be plenty in your life to enjoy. And, you are going to find new things to enjoy that you will probably love even more!

PhysIQ Lifestyle Medicine would be happy to help you. It may not be easy, but it really is a lot more simple than you think. And, you once you start to Live Life Well you will be glad that you picked up the phone and made the call. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
